Sremska Mitrovica municipality occupies the central position in the Srem District and is the administrative centre of this district. The very town of Sremska Mitrovica lies on the left bank of the river Sava. Following the construction of the foot bridge, a remarkable architectural solution, which bears the name of Saint Ireneaus, today this is a town on two river banks since the bridge connects the main cores of Sremska Mitrovica and Mačvanska Mitrovica.
The town has an outstanding location because not only does it lie on a navigable river, but there is also an international motorway and railroad, and it is only about fifty kilometers away from the Belgrade airport.
On the location of the biggest present-day town in Srem, in the Roman period, there used to be an ancient capital Sirmium, from which a vast area was run, stretching from present-day Budapest all the way to the Greek island of Crete. It was one of the largest cities of the ancient world, and numerous and extremely valuable monuments remain from that period.
